Smart water management across 3 400 hectares of citrus farmland

The challenge

A large citrus operation in Limpopo was losing significant water through undetected pipe breaks and inefficient irrigation scheduling. Their existing infrastructure had no real-time monitoring capability, and the farm manager was making decisions based on weekly manual readings. Load-shedding was causing pumps to run dry and destroying motors.

Our solution

Gito deployed a LoRaWAN-based smart metering network across the farm with 47 flow sensors feeding into a centralised IoT dashboard. We integrated automated pump control with load-shedding schedules via the Eskom API and configured threshold alerts via SMS and WhatsApp. A backup communications path via LTE ensured data continuity during power outages.

Outcomes

  • 34% reduction in water usage in the first season
  • Zero pump motor failures in 18 months post-deployment
  • Real-time visibility across all 12 irrigation zones from any device
  • Payback period of under 14 months
Network infrastructure and cyber security overhaul for a 400-vehicle logistics operator

Network infrastructure and cyber security overhaul for a 400-vehicle logistics operator

The challenge

A mid-sized logistics company operating out of three Gauteng depots had grown rapidly but their IT infrastructure had not kept pace. They were running a flat network with no segmentation, using consumer-grade routers, and had suffered two ransomware incidents in 18 months. Remote access for their dispatch team was done via an unsecured RDP connection exposed to the internet.

Our solution

Gito conducted a full network audit and rebuilt the infrastructure from the ground up. We deployed Fortinet FortiGate firewalls at each site, implemented VLAN segmentation separating OT, user, and CCTV traffic, and replaced the RDP exposure with FortiClient VPN with MFA. Endpoint protection was rolled out across 280 machines. We also configured centralised logging and a 24/7 monitoring alerting policy.

Outcomes

  • Zero security incidents in 12 months following deployment
  • RDP exposure eliminated — no public-facing attack surface
  • Network latency between depots reduced by 60% after switching to SD-WAN
  • Insurance premium reduced after third-party security audit confirmed compliance
Full cloud migration and remote work enablement for a 65-person accounting firm

Full cloud migration and remote work enablement for a 65-person accounting firm

The challenge

A Gauteng-based accounting firm with 65 staff was running on an ageing on-premise server that was approaching end-of-life. Staff were increasingly working remotely but access to financial systems was slow and unreliable. The firm faced a looming POPIA compliance deadline and had no formal data backup or DR policy.

Our solution

Gito scoped and executed a phased migration to Microsoft Azure, moving file storage, email, and the firm's practice management system to cloud infrastructure. We implemented Microsoft 365 with Intune device management, Azure AD with conditional access policies, and automated nightly backups with geo-redundant storage. A POPIA compliance framework was implemented covering data classification, access controls, and an incident response procedure.

Outcomes

  • On-premise server decommissioned — R180 000 hardware refresh avoided
  • Staff can now securely access all systems from any device, anywhere
  • Full POPIA compliance achieved ahead of the regulatory deadline
  • RTO reduced from 3 days to under 4 hours with tested DR runbooks
Complex multi-vendor network restoration for DMS Powders — operations back online in 24 hours

Complex multi-vendor network restoration for DMS Powders — operations back online in 24 hours

The challenge

DMS Powders, a specialist mining inputs producer, suffered a complete failure of their operations network when critical routing and switching infrastructure went offline — affecting production systems, order processing, and logistics coordination simultaneously. The environment combined Dell switching hardware with FortiGate firewalls in a multi-vendor topology that had evolved over years without updated documentation. With no redundant failover path in place, every hour of downtime translated directly into lost output.

Our solution

Gito mobilised immediately with an on-site assessment. We mapped and diagnosed the full topology across both Dell and FortiGate layers — identifying collapsed VLAN segmentation from a failed firmware update, a failed core Dell switch with no redundant path, and DNS misconfiguration that prevented internal services from resolving. Within the first 24 hours we restored core connectivity by rebuilding the switching fabric with proper redundancy, rearchitecting VLAN segmentation to isolate production traffic, and deploying a failover path between the FortiGate appliances. We delivered a complete topology map and support runbook for the in-house team.

Outcomes

  • Core operations network restored within 24 hours of Gito engagement
  • Redundant failover path implemented — no single point of failure remains
  • VLAN segmentation rebuilt to isolate production, office, and guest traffic
  • Full network documentation and topology map delivered for in-house reference
  • DMS Powders moved to a managed support agreement for ongoing monitoring
